New technology foresight: Agricultural mining

Certain plants -- called "hyperenriched plants" -- can absorb metals at extremely high concentrations from the soil. The concept of agricultural mining refers to growing such plants and then burning them to produce bioore from which useful metals can be extracted. Agricultural mining could lead to more sustainable new supplies of nickel and cobalt, but the outlook is risky given the industry's very early stage.
