California needs energy storage batteries to make photovoltaics more economical

2022-06-16

According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, California's large energy storage batteries will account for 43% of its installed large photovoltaic capacity by 2030. Installing storage batteries is crucial to shifting the state's high-pv generation to peak demand.

Bloomberg New Energy Finance also projects that by 2030, residential energy storage battery capacity will equal a quarter of California's residential photovoltaic capacity. Most of the new systems will be built with energy-storage batteries because the price of photovoltaic electricity sold to the grid by households has fallen over time and utility rate structures encourage users to store energy and use it at night. California's power outages will also encourage more homes to install energy-storage batteries.
