China builds CCUS projects for large coal power plants
China Huaneng, the country's leading power company, has announced the world's largest carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) project for a coal-fired power plant. Based on China's commitment to decarbonization, CCUS has become an indispensable technological hedge for reducing emissions in heavy industry.
The new project will be 10 times the size of China's largest existing coal power CCUS project. Located in Gansu Province, the project will capture 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide annually from two coal-fired power plants with an installed capacity of 1GW each after it is completed and put into operation in December 2023. More than 90% of carbon emissions will be captured for enhanced oil recovery and carbon sequeration.
